(Typeface mounted into an illustration by Eberhard Binder from the book »Wo ist Melenka?« by Ingrid Naglowa.)
Canary is born of the desire for a typeface, which complements varied styles of illustration and is also viable in a certain package design, primarily concerned with the handmade.
Canary is meant to be distinct from rigid or similarly inhibited sans serif fonts that contrast too much with the illustration and become an awkward foreign matter. It has been designed as a hybrid typeface of italic and script with a subtle left slant, which makes it even more specific. In order to emphasize on the lively written dynamics, Canary is equipped with tons of ligatures and alternate characters substituting themselves automatically via Open Type features. It is heavily formalized in the detail drawing to work in larger amounts of text as well.
Little imperfections such as overshooting glyphs are essential for human charm and pleasant groove. Here we find the parallels to music in which rhythm and individuality are so relevant likewise.
